Mel Bochner print Ha Ha, 2019 is a unique monoprint featuring Bochner’s famous lettering. Bochner has been interested in the intersections between language and art for most of his career. The artist writes in his book Mel Bochner: If the Color Changes: “While painting slowly lost its preeminent position in modern art, language moved from talking about art to becoming part of art itself.” Bochner is known for his use of lettering and bright colors, which create eye-catching and vibrant compositions. This monoprint features the word “HA HA” with each letter formed with a different vibrant pigment. Bochner deconstructs the idea of what ‘fine art’ is meant to be, much like his contemporary Andy Warhol did with his Campbell’s Soup Cans. Through the artist’s use of color and texture, Bochner is able to create a captivating work of art out of four simple letters.
