Historical Description

In Maurice de Vlaminck's Houses Along the Road (Maisons au bord de la route) beautiful pastoral scene unfolds before the viewer’s eyes in this endearing scene of houses along a country road. Known for using colors to convey mood, Vlaminck emphasizes the peaceful landscape with delicately painted greens and yellows against a hint of deep blue. We can easily imagine strolling through such a town in the early months of autumn, the yellow leaves and the blue water to reminding us of summer slowly passing.

This unique original watercolor of pen and ink on paper is hand-signed by Maurice de Vlaminck (Paris, 1876-Rueil-la-Gadeliere, 1958) in black in the lower right of the image. This work will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné being prepared by Maïthé Vallè-Bled and Codeliève de Vlaminck under the sponsorship of the Wildenstein Institute.
