Historical Description

Marc Chagall The Train Crossed the Red Sea from Exodus, 1966; In perhaps the most climactic moment in the story of Exodus, Moses raises his staff and parts the Red Sea, allowing the Israelites to escape from the pursuing Egyptian forces. In this work, Chagall simultaneously depicts the Israelites' escape and the Egyptians' demise. The viewer witnesses the Israelites receding into the background, while in the foreground, the water reconvenes, wiping out the violent Egyptian forces. The angels of the Lord soar through the sky, guiding the Israelites on their path to freedom while Moses appears as a large, powerful figure in the lower left, arm raised and face set with determination.

Created in 1966, this work was part of the series Exodus, which consists of 24 lithographs, each with an edition of 250 (from the total edition of 285, the edition of 250 (the prints were not numbered), 20 numbered from I - XX, and 15 artist's proofs). This work is hand-signed by Marc Chagall (1887-1985) in pencil in the lower right.
