No place inspired Chagall more than Nice, and this fruitful partnership of love and admiration is perfectly encapsulated in the magical work before you, Marc Chagall Sirène au Pine (Siren with Pine), from Nice & the Côte d'Azur, 1967. A magenta siren floats above the beautifully detailed city, wistfully reaching for an enchanting bouquet of flowers. A lone pine stands beside her, as if trying to reach up to where she is so as not to get left behind. A sense of longing and desire fill the page, as the siren refuses to make contact with the viewer and rather appears to delight in her dreamlike world. What is she missing? What does she want? Only the gorgeous rich tones of reds, blues, and greens give way to her secrets.
This piece is part of a set of 12 lithographs titled Nice and the Côte d'Azur that were created in collaboration between Chagall and Charles Sorlier. Created in 1967 after an original gouache by Marc Chagall, this color lithograph is hand signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 - Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right margin and numbered from the edition of 150 in pencil in the lower left margin.
