Chagall Méditation (Meditation), 1979 uses modern and whimsical elements to create a soulful portrait of a rabbinic man deep in contemplation. Born to a Hasidic family and often described as the quintessential Jewish artist, Marc Chagall was greatly influenced by his cultural and religious heritage, manifesting in this work in both subject matter and his iconic, folkloric style. True to the Hasidic interpretation, the central figure meditates in the forest. Immersed in thatched woods of gestural marks, the focus of this piece is the central figure, shown huddled, captivated in his text. Above him, two angelic figures present the Torah, with its distinctive red color, symbolizing life. An offering of immense expression and empathy, Meditation is a stunningly surreal expression of spirituality and prayer.
Created in 1979, this color lithograph is hand-signed in pencil by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 - Saint-Paul, 1985) in the lower right margin. This work is numbered from the edition of 50 in the lower left margin.
