In this tender scene, the individual is central to the composition of Marc Chagall Le Poète (The Poet), 1966. The poet tilts their head slightly to the right and raises a hand to their face. With eyes turned downwards, the poet has a sense of contemplation about them. The other hand rests on the chest of the poet, in a loving gesture. On the right side of the lithograph, two figures stand languorously. The woman relaxes, leaning back against the face of the poet. The poets’ hair flows across her body, partially covering its nudity. She carries a blooming bouquet of flowers, ripe with purples, reds, and greens. Next to her stands a nimble man and above them hovers a white dove. The man, woman, and dove are creative ideas of the poet that have been actualized by Chagall. They float romantically outside the mind of the poet.
Created in 1966, this color lithograph on Arches paper is hand signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887- Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right margin and is numbered from the edition of 50 in pencil in the lower left margin.
