Marc Chagall L’oiseau bleu (The Blue Bird), 1968 exemplifies the dreamlike compositions and imagery often found in his oeuvre. Below, a small town slumbers, welcoming the night as the last of the warm yellow sun disappears below the horizon. To the right of the bird an elegant figure appears with lush green skin and beautiful flowers and vines growing from her head like hair. This verdant woman, perhaps representing the earth, looks down on the sleeping town like a night-watchman. The romantic scene is typical of his, as well as the rich colors used to portray the scene.
Created in 1968, this color lithograph on arches wove paper engraved by Charles Sorlier under the direction of Marc Chagall is based on a gouache Chagall created in 1954. Hand signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 - Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right margin, numbered 96/200 in pencil in the lower left; printed by Mourlot Paris. This work is published by Maeght Editeur for the Biennial Editions of Menton. Sorlier's name appears in the plate on the lower right of the image, and Chagall's name and date of the original work appear in the lower left.
