This lovely lithograph exemplifies Chagall's immense talent both as a colorist and as an imaginative printmaker. A beautiful woman and a delightful rooster stand before a large, open window, through which we can glimpse the great outdoors. The rooster, a reoccurring symbol within Chagall's works, often represents fertility, perhaps highlighting this woman as a life force. Three bountiful bouquets upon the table further relate to this theme of fertility and prosperity, while outside, we witness a flying figure that appears as a child, perhaps representing the woman's future son or daughter. Rich with saturated color and soft, dreamy line work, this stunning print perfectly captures Chagall's signature, whimsical artistic style.
Created in 1976, this original lithograph is hand signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 - Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right margin and numbered from the edition of 50 in pencil in the lower left margin (aside from 10 artist's proofs on Japon numbered in Roman numbers).
