Marc Chagall’s Les Deux Rives (The Two Banks), 1980 features a view of the Eiffel Tower and the River Seine among the whimsical figures that characterize Chagall’s dreamlike style. Small houses and coupled figures speckle the right bank of the river. On the other side, a figure with the head of a horse holds a bouquet of flowers and completely fills the left bank of the river, its slender body extending halfway up the image. The tall pointy form of the Eiffel Tower stands before the face of the horse-headed figure, rising high above the horizon line. In the sky, a male and female figure clasp each other as they float over the throng of houses by the bank. Weaved into the landmarks of Paris are figures that turn the scene into a place of fantasy. As Chagall once said, “All our interior world is reality, and that, perhaps, more so than our apparent world.” Marc Chagall’s Les Deux Rives (The Two Banks), 1980 exemplifies Chagall’s affinity for allowing the imagination to enhance the real world.
