Heralded as the monarch of Jewish and Christian tradition, King David remains one of the most captivating and intriguing people from our historic past. Marc Chagall has chosen him as the subject of a series of four lithographs titled Le Roi David (King David) in 1974. Shown here before his subjects, an angel overhead passes with open arms, as if to bless his reign and entire kingdom below. Subtle colorations of green, yellow, and sky blue serve as accents to Chagall's expressive, light strokes, giving this work an intimate, peaceful air.
Created in 1974, this work is part of a series of four lithographs by Marc Chagall, profiling King David of Jerusalem. Out of the total edition of 40 numbered proofs, this piece is lettered EA in pencil in the lower left margin and hand signed by Marc Chagall (1887 - 1985) in pencil in the lower right. Printed on Japon nacreous paper.
