Bright and cheerful, Marc Chagall Le Dimanche (On Sundays) from Derrière le Miroir, 1954 depicts two intertwined lovers floating in the sky - except in this case, it is just the large and shining faces of the pair which appear almost like the twin solar bodies of the sun and the moon. The background shines with the golden light of sunset, and in the lower register we see Paris start to slumber. The Eiffel Tower is catching the final warm rays of the sun, but the cathedral is already resting in the purple and blue shadows of evening. A romantic and peaceful essence pervades the lithograph, creating a charming atmosphere.
Created in 1954, this color lithograph was included in a catalogue titled Derrière le Miroir published for an exhibition of Chagall’s work organized by Galerie Maeght. It is hand-signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 – Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right; a proof aside from the numbered edition of 75.
