Marc Chagall Le Coq Rouge (The Red Rooster), 1957, reflects Chagall's favored printing technique where he was able to maintain the freshness of drawing and the "watercolor-like washes…whose effect closely resembles that of his luminescent gouaches." (Gauss, 45) The large red rooster dominates the right side of the picture with gestural lines that direct the viewer towards a couple looking out of a window to the left. In the center of the composition, we witness a bold bluish-green plant and an outdoor scene that includes the half-crescent moon, the indication of buildings, and what appears to be the Eiffel Tower. Chagall transports us to this peaceful scene of Paris in the late 1950's, capturing the romance and beauty of this remarkable city.
Created in 1957, Le Coq Rouge (The Red Rooster) is an important print from the book Jacques Lassaigne: Chagall. Published by Maeght and printed by Mourlot Frères in Paris, this work is hand signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 - Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right. This work is numbered from the edition of 90 in pencil in the lower left.
