Marc Chagall Le Cirque (The Circus), 1967 takes place in the lively arena of a circus full of eager onlookers, just as performers take the stage. In a dazzling spectacle of color, these performers each bring their own talent and energy to the show. Figures in blue and green swing upside down on a circular rope while another figure in red flies through the air in a marvelous display of balance and coordination. To the left of the composition stands a musician with a violin, adding more entertainment and sense to this stunning portrayal of a circus. Chagall includes the audience, who sit at the bottom of the image, with gazes all trained up to the performers swinging around the tent. Overall, Chagall has successfully translated the feeling of being part of a circus performance where talented performers take hold of one's imagination and fill the viewer with awe and wonder.
Created in 1967, this color lithograph on Arches paper is hand-signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887- Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right.
