This enchanting work leaves the viewers’ hearts and minds full. Marc Chagall Le Bouquet (The Bouquet), 1955 comprises some of Chagall’s more well-known and loved compositional elements. Taking up the majority of the image is a beautifully blossoming bouquet of flowers. Delicate orange, red, and yellow roses sit amongst luscious greenery. Above the bouquet in the upper register is a brilliant red landscape where a small town appears. A woman floats above the town and the bouquet, looking down. Finally, to the right of the bouquet is a man – holding another bouquet in his hands, he looks more somber. Mirrored below him is a woman with flowing brown hair. She is essential to the scene, and yet we must wonder who she is. The lighter and greener coloration is a marked different from the fiery red. But the contrast sets two different scenes – perhaps the town is a memory, being contemplated by the introspective figure on the right. We are left to fill in the story ourselves.
Created in 1955, this work is printed on Arches Block wove paper and is hand-signed in pencil by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 – Saint-Paul, 1985) in the lower right margin. The original for this work was a watercolor that Charles Sorlier, Chagall's master printer, translated into an original color lithograph. Chagall supervised and approved the images Sorlier printed by hand signing the finished work. Published by Editions Galerie Maeght, Paris, this work is numbered from the edition of 300 in pencil in the lower left margin.
