Marc Chagall Le Bouquet Bleu (The Blue Bouquet), 1974 is infused with spontaneity and joy. Chagall renders a gorgeous bouquet and embracing couple against a large window that lets in the light of the world. A large, luscious violet-blue bouquet sits upon a table, dominating the right half of the composition. Chagall does not focus on the shapes of the flowers but rather their coloring, using soft, swirling strokes of blue to suggest the grouping of beautiful flowers. To the lower right, the viewer witnesses the busts of a loving red-headed couple. The male's face, conveyed in profile, rests above the female's, conveyed in a frontal view. He appears as if behind her, enveloping her in a loving embrace. The left half of the composition consists of a large, airy window from which the viewer can just make out green foliage outside. The natural green and yellow hues provide a nice complement to the bold blue of the indoor bouquet.
Created in 1974, this color lithograph is hand-signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 – Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right; inscribed ‘Epreuve d’artiste’ (artist's proof) in pencil in the lower left; aside from the numbered edition of 50.
