Historical Description

A bountiful bouquet of pure white flowers bursts forth in this stunning print. Deviating slightly from his trademark style, Chagall uses bold black lines to convey the basic composition of this work, allowing the white spaces devoid of color to define his composition. The overall impression is one of peace and harmony, as we witness angelic figures to the lower left and white doves soaring amidst the blossoming blooms. Graceful Calla Lillies peak out at the top of the bouquet while white tulips rest near the bottom. Chagall offers a voluptuous composition in which nearly all space is utilized, filled with soft, arched forms that contribute to the elegant and beautiful nature of this magnificent piece.
Created in 1969, this work is hand-signed in pencil by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 - Saint-Paul, 1985) in the lower right margin. This work is also numbered 40/50 in pencil in the lower left margin.
