In Marc Chagall L’Atelier de Nuit (The Studio at Night), 1980, materializing in whispering outlines, we find ourselves transported into this nocturnal space of surreal possibilities. Encompassed in darkness, subtle traces define the figures that inhabit this humble artist’s studio. Despite this darkness, the work is humming with energy, as soft hues of lustrous colors illuminate the composition with a dreamlike atmosphere. At the center, an artist assumed to be Chagall himself paints a vibrant bouquet. Surrounded by whimsical motifs including a yellow sheep, nestled hen, and a peak-roofed house, his true inspiration is revealed in the upper right, pulling both the gaze of the viewer and the painter. A graceful, nude woman floats effortlessly against the night sky. One cannot help but guess she is Bella, Chagall’s love and muse whom he lost too soon, her memory preserved in this magical tribute.
Created in 1980, this color lithograph is hand-signed in pencil by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 - Saint-Paul, 1985) in the lower right margin. This work is numbered from the edition of 50 in the lower left margin.
