Depicting a highly momentous and thrilling scene, Jacob and the Angel are seen here as if in a snapshot against a brilliant cobalt blue background in Marc Chagall La lutte du Jacob et du l'Ange (The Fight Between Jacob & the Angel), 1967. Surrounded by mythical creatures, a crowd of onlookers, and a mother and child in the lower right, the composition is executed in typical Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887- Saint-Paul, 1985) mastery, with equally bold, complementary colors of emerald green, canary yellow, and blushing violets.
Created in 1967 this original color lithograph was engraved by Charles Sorlier after an oil on canvas by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887- Saint-Paul, 1985) titled The Struggle of Jacob & the Angel. This work by Sorlier was also used for a poster edition with text for an exhibition of the important collection donated by Mr. & Mrs. Marc Chagall to the French nation at the Louvre, Paris. Numbered 23/100 in pencil in the lower left margin and hand signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887- Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right margin. Published by the Editions of National Museums, Paris and printed by Mourlot, Paris on Arches wove watermarked paper; 'CH. SORLIER GRAV.' printed in black in the lower left of the image.
