Historical Description

Expressing the lyrical narrative quality of his work, Chagall depicts a sense of trepidation and turbulence in this ocean scene.

Created in May 1972, this work is printed on Arches wove watermarked paper and is signed by Chagall in pencil in the lower right hand side of the image. Published by Maeght Editeur, Paris, this work is numbered from the edition of 50 in pencil in the lower left.

Monochromatically composed with variations of blue tones, this work is full of rich textures and a watercolor quality that creates a sense of depth and space. With a fish outstretched pulling Jonas to the depths of the sea, the expression on his face appears stunned and bewildered. A group in the distance wave from a boat, appearing frantic while an angel flies above this scene. The sea is full of dark black waves and textures with a highlight surrounding Jonas, depicting the turbulence and tumultuousness of this scene. Intricately composed, the imagery is surrounded by black hatched lines framing the scene within the picture plane.
