An iconic and defining moment in the story of Moses comes to life in this vibrant etching Chagall The Crossing of the Red Sea pl. 34 from the Bible Series, 1958. To the left of the image, we see the figure of Moses, dramatically lifting his staff to allow the Israelites’ crossing. Above the massive crowd soars an angel, observing the triumphant scene below. Billowing waves separate the Israelites from the Egyptians. The Egyptians are marked by patchy red coloring, a clear visual reminder of their fates. Of course a Chagall artwork would not be complete without exquisite use of color, and subsequently there are surreal shades of pink and blue that highlight Chagall’s unique vision of the Bible. Chagall transforms a classical biblical narrative into an unforgettable work of modern art.
Created in 1958, this Etching with hand-applied watercolor is hand signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 – Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil 'M. Ch.' in the lower right margin. This piece is numbered from the Roman numeral edition of V in pencil in the lower left margin; aside from the numbered edition of 100 in Arabic numerals.
