A painter gazes down at his palette as he sits in front of his easel in Marc Chagall Musique (Music) from Songes, 1981. He looks distraught, as if trying to grasp and idea that he cannot quite reach. His chest is stained with dark red around his hand. Standing on his head is a violinist, an literal portrayal of the music and creative energy in his head that he attempts to put onto the canvas. In typical Chagall fashion, swathes of color brighten the page in simple red, green, and yellow. These colors highlight the scene and add light to a dreamy composition.
Created in 1981, this color etching with aquatint on Rives wove paper is hand signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887- Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right and inscribed ‘HC’, aside from the numbered edition of 50 in the lower left; there was also an edition of 10 numbered in Roman numerals.
