Marc Chagall Le Chevalet (The Easel) from Songes, 1981 depicts an artist standing at an easel with a paint palette in hand, contemplating his work. The artist is bathed in soft blue light from the sun in the upper left corner – but the colors of his painting are a much warmer array of yellow, orange, and red. Chagall is distinctive for the ways in which he splashes areas of color across his works, often leaving areas without color. This painter uses a similar technique, as we see his painting has a broad patch of yellow across the top, but that some of the painting remains untouched by color. Is the painter Chagall himself? In such a layered image, there is much to discover with every viewing.
Created in 1981, this color etching with aquatint on Rives wove paper is hand signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887- Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right and numbered from the edition of 50 in the lower left; there was also an edition of 10 numbered in Roman numerals.
