The only American artist to participate in leading both the Dada and Surrealist movements, Man Ray did much more than make photographs; he created films, paintings, and objects, even venturing into what would later be termed performance and conceptual art. This striking image of Julie, his wife Juliet Browner, contains the same mystery and ambiguity that made his photography famous.
Although on the face this appears to be a simple portrait of a woman, the posed placement of the hands and decorative rendering of the woman's jet black hair lend artifice. That we cannot even see the woman's facial features further denies the 'portrait' aspect of this work. It would be more fittingly termed an anti-portrait. Julie shows us a woman while hiding her, and is a notably strong example of Man Ray's work.
Created in 1970, this original color lithograph was printed on Arches paper by Jacques David, Paris. Published by Richard Binder, this work is hand-signed by Man Ray (Philadelphia, 1890 - Paris, 1976) in pencil in the lower right margin and numbered 71/100 in pencil in the lower left margin.
