Keith Haring Plate II, from Fertility Suite, 1983 is a vibrant screenprint full of some of Haring’s most famous motifs. Haring often used his artwork to tackle important human issues, like sexuality, race, violence, birth and death. His Fertility Suite includes a series of images all about birth and fertility, all featuring figures of pregnant women. In Plate II, the composition includes a pregnant figure in red worshiping what seems to be a pyramid, with two UFOs floating above in the dark night sky. Haring’s cartoon-like figure drawings are often likened to Egyptian hieroglyphs. He used bright, bold colors and simple lines to create an easily recognizable visual language, that harkens back to ancient glyphic languages and transcends modern day language barriers. This work is a stunning example of Haring’s ability to use simple imagery to explore complex human issues.
