Keith Haring Growing (Plate 5), 1988 is the fifth and final installment in the artist’s Growing Portfolio of 1988. This work has the least restricted palette of all five works in this series with shades in green, yellow, red, blue and black. The artist maintains distinct separation and precision in these hues by using screen printing, a method of printing which involves passing ink through a treated mesh onto paper. On the left and right sides of the composition, Haring renders what appear to be two figure sin profile bent over a throne which a red figure is sitting on in the center. Behind this figure, a form in yellow looks down upon the figure in the foreground. Its arms are stretched out towards either side of the composition and its hands hover just above the backs of the figures in blue. Behind this yellow form, the artist renders a theatrical red background lined with green partitions with jagged edges on the right and left sides and a blue overhanging slab of blue at the top.
Keith Haring’s Growing (Plate 5), 1988 is part of a portfolio of five screenprints in the artist’s Growing Portfolio of 1988. This body of work depicts fragments of figures rendered in the artist’s signature style dismantled and reconstructed to create enormous singular forms that dominate their compositions. Also featured in this portfolio are Growing (Plate 1), Growing (Plate 2), Growing (Plate 3), and Growing (Plate 4).
Created in 1988, this screenprint is hand-signed by Keith Haring (Reading, 1958 – New York, 1990) in pencil in the center right image and numbered 'TP 9/40' (one of 40 unique color variant trial proofs, the edition was 100, plus fifteen artist's proofs), published by Martin Lawrence Editions, New York, with their blindstamp and ink stamp on the reverse.
