Keith Haring Lucky Strike (Plate 2), from the Lucky Strike Portfolio, 1987 is the second work in the artist’s Lucky Strike portfolio of 1987. In this work, the artist illustrates an open box of Lucky Strike cigarettes hovering above an open orange hand over a blue background. These forms are rendered in bold and precise line and color, staples of Haring’s work that are enhanced by the printing method known as screenprinting. The cigarettes extruding out of the top of the box are not stiff and straight like the average cigarette; they curve and wind upwards in a chaotic motion. In this series, Haring uses the visual language of advertising to project his ideas forward. In Lucky Strike (Plate 2), he takes what could be an advertisement for cigarettes and modifies it in order to propagate a new idea.
Keith Haring’s Lucky Strike (Plate 2), 1987 is part of a portfolio of five screenprints in the artist’s Lucky Strike portfolio of 1987. This body of work depicts boxes of Lucky Strike cigarettes, the top-selling brand of cigarettes of the 1930s and ‘40s, alongside some of the artist’s signature illustrations. Featured in this portfolio are Lucky Strike (Plate 1), Lucky Strike (Plate 2), Lucky Strike (Plate 3), Lucky Strike (Plate 4), and Lucky Strike (Plate 5).
Created in 1987, this silkscreen is hand-signed by Keith Haring (Reading, 1958 – New York, 1990) in pencil in the center right image and numbered from the edition of 80 in pencil in the center right image.
