With frenzied line work and contrasting controlled figures, this work by Miró tells a different story than its associated illustrations. With the moon as the focus the theme is still astral, but there is a mixture of curious figures that seem drawn to it. A sense of energy and liveliness radiates from them as they partake in a celebration. For what purpose who can say for sure, but the wonderful detail in the primary color choice, combined with strong line work, make this a captivating composition.
Created in 1972, this color lithograph is one in a series of eleven lithographs created to illustrate the text by Michel Leiris. Hand-signed by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 - Palma, 1983) in pencil in the lower right, this work is annotated H.C. (Hors de Commerce) in pencil in the lower left. Printed by Mourlot, Paris, this work is an artist proof aside from the signed and numbered edition of 150 and the edition of 80 printed with wide margins, signed and numbered with Roman numerals.
