Joan Miró Miró Pl. 4 from La Mélodie Acide (The Acid Melody), 1980 was created in collaboration with Patrick Waldberg, a well-known surrealist writer and art historian. The artist often interacted with poems and works of literature as he was developing his own visual language. For Miro, art was the perfect medium to express written poetry. In this lithograph, a central figure colored in black adorns the page. Thinly drawn white lines contrast strongly against the black background, forming a curious expression. Viewers can easily imagine the playful zigzag forming the character’s mouth and the two white dots above marking the eyes. Adorning the character are bursts of color in red, green and blue. These three primary colors are common in Miró’s oeuvre. Surrounding this amorphous figure are lightly drawn circles. This effectively emphasizes the character and adds a decorative element to this piece. The eclectic array of color, form and texture ensure that this work will stand out in any room.
Created in 1980, this lithograph has the hand-signed signature of Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 – Palma, 1983) in pencil in the lower right. Inscribed ‘H.C’ (hors d’commerce) in pencil in the lower right, from the edition of 14 (aside from the edition of 20, numbered I to 20; edition of 81 numbered 21 to 101; edition of 14 numbered I/VII to VII/VII), published by Au Pont des Arts-Galerie Lucie Weill, Paris; printed by La Polígrafa, S.A., Barcelona.
