Joan Miró’s Les Essències de la Terra, 1968 combines poetic lyricism with artistic interpretation. Based on the written work of Juan Perucho and 8 ancient Catalonian texts, the lithograph plays with character and story-telling. This art work also honors Miró’s Catalonian heritage. Bold black lines of brushed ink speed across the composition layered over the image. Against the speckled patterns of verdant green, red, blue, and yellow, the black ink makes a stark juxtaposition. Large markings reminiscent of arrows thriving in an upwards motion create a euphoria of elevation. Known for automatism and abstract symbols, Joan Miró takes the written work of Juan Perucho and reinterprets in an artistic rendition. Quirky and eccentric but sophisticated all at once, this masterpiece has the ability to satisfy your soul.
Created in 1968, Les Essències de la Terra is a lithograph with hand-coloring on Japon nacré paper and is hand-signed by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 – Palma, 1983) in pencil in the lower right.
