Joan Miró L'enfance d'Ubu (Childhood of Ubu), 1975 is one of three illustrated books inspired by the French playwright Alfred Jarry's (1873-1907) plays Ubu Roi, Ubu Cocu, and Ubu Enchaîné. As is seen in this illustration, depicting Ubu's adolescence, Ubu is having fun playing with bubbles. "Notorious for his infantile engagement with the world," Jane Taylor (2007) wrote in Ubu and the Truth Commission, Ubu is unmistakably smitten in this fantastic transformation into Miró's charming world.
Created in 1975, this work is out of an album of 24 prints under the same title. Hand-signed by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 - Palma, 1983) in pencil in the lower right margin, this piece is annotated ‘HC’ (hors commerce) in pencil in the lower left with the accompanying hors commerce Roman edition of 20 written next to it. A total edition of 140 copies printed on Arches wove or japan nacré exists, comprising a signed and numbered edition of 120, in addition to our work from 20 hors commerce copies, numbered from I to XX. Printed by Mourlot, Paris, the album was published by Tériade Editeur, also in Paris.
