Joan Miró Festa Major, 1978 is a beautiful example of Miró’s artistic genius with color and shape. Miró uses both thick and thin black lines that crisscross each other to create organic and geometric shapes, forming an energetic figure in the center of the work. Miró fills the work with blocks of brightly saturated red, yellow, blue and green, all colors he frequently used throughout his career. In this lithograph, it is easy to see Miró’s skill in creating a balanced composition. The placement of the blocks and pops of color draw the viewer’s eye around the work, with equal distribution of red, the most eye-catching color, throughout. Miró was an experimentalist throughout his artistic career, and wove in and out of artistic movements, like magical realism and Surrealism, as he saw fit. He created his own pictorial language, the simple shapes, lines, and colors that Miró still is known for today. This work shows the viewer all of Miró’s creative strengths in an incredibly captivating and colorful composition.
Created in 1978, this color lithograph on Arches paper is hand-signed by Joan Miró in pencil in the lower right image and numbered from the edition of 75, aside from edition of 25 numbered ‘H.C.’
