Joan Miró Exhibition at the Galerie Matarasso, 1957 bursts with vibrant color. The background is filled with a sunny yellow and a lush red that are complimented nicely by cooler, saturated swatches of blue and green. Playful lines create sparkling stars, and an entertaining border is created using dots. The face of the figure in the middle is highlighted with the deep blue and is striking with its long nose and large black eyes. The head appears to be peaking out over the red band near the bottom of the composition. Behind the figure rise black, trident shapes which come to life with added color and curving lines that give them the appearance of being alive. In particular the trident shape on the left crooks its top down, almost like a head or the bloom of a flower. Miró creates a magical world within this lithograph, helped by his spirited use of eye-catching colors and his ability to make abstract shapes come to life.
Created in 1957, this color lithograph is hand signed by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 – Palma, 1983) in pencil in the lower right corner and numbered from the edition of 125 in pencil in the lower left corner; published by Galerie Matarasso and printed before the addition of lettering.
