Joan Miró Hommage a San Lazzaro, Pl. 3, 1977 offers a bold and vibrant example of the artist’s playfully unique compositions. An almost-abstract figural form outlined in white floats in the midst of a solid black background with other amorphous forms on either side of it. Aside from black and white, the primary colors of red, blue, and yellow are the only other colors present in this work. By restricting the color palette, Miró draws attention to the shapes and forms created by the colors themselves. To the left of the composition, a solid red circular form is encased in a white outline with evenly-spaced tendrils protruding all the way around it. At the center of the figural form is a wavy stroke of red, which visually parallels the shape and placement of a spine at the center of a body. In Joan Miró Hommage a San Lazzaro, Pl. 3, 1977, the rich black background carved out by white and pops of primary color creates a striking composition that is sure to catch the eye.
