Joan Miró Village D'Oiseaux, (Village of the Birds), 1969; Animals short and tall, long and thin, four legged and winged, are all represented in this spirited composition. With a primary color palette of red, yellow, blue and green, their bodies are blocked in and cradled between contrasting thick and thin black lines. When combined with the whimsical symbols surrounding them, the composition exudes a playful message despite its rather abstract form. This is the beauty of Miró's work, because in his unique world, all life seems caught in a moment of pleasure which demonstrates his ability to transport us somewhere else.
Created in 1969, this color etching and carborundum is hand-signed by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 - Palma, 1983) in pencil in the lower right. Printed in Paris by Arte Adrien Maeght, and published by Maeght Éditeur, Paris, this piece is annotated 'E.A.' (Epreuve d'artiste), an artist proof aside from the numbered edition of 75.
