Joan Miró, Liberté des Libertés (Freedom of Freedoms), 1971, exemplifying his stylistic range as a printmaker, deviates from Miró playful primary color palette to depict this animated image in red and black. Zigzagging red strokes contrast sharply against the all black background, instilling this work with a sense of energy and vigor. Aptly entitled Liberté des Libertés (Freedom of Freedoms), this work is both passionate and lively. Its fiery imagery, interrupted only by a small circular patch of white and blue, brings to mind the passion and determination required to fight for one's freedom. Distinct textural elements enrich this print; the red strokes are reminiscent of the texture of crayons while the etching in its entirety is intentionally pasted on grey cardboard, offering an additional surface as a point of contrast.
Created in 1971, this etching pasted on grey cardboard is part of the series Liberté des Libertés (Freedom of Freedoms). This work is hand signed Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 - Palma, 1983) in white pencil in the lower right and numbered from the edition of 125 in white pencil in the lower left (total edition of 125 signed and numbered 1-125, plus 24 copies signed and numbered in Roman numerals and 3 copies signed and marked A/C to C/C).This piece is printed by Arte Adrien Maeght, Paris and published by Le Soleil Noir, Paris.
