Historical Description

Incorporating text into the overall composition, Miró creates a striking work. His signature bold, black lines paired with vibrant, primary colors create a cross-like formation at the center of the composition. Relaying the illusion that a weathered newspaper clipping is layered beneath the central image, Miró creates a collage-like effect that suggests a variety of textures. The weathered appearance of the black and white newspaper font contrasts starkly with the saturated, colorful segments of the central figure, while, throughout the work, circular burst of color in black, pink, blue, green, and brown convey the illusion that the work is splattered or sprayed with paint.

Created in 1979, this original color etching was published by Maeght, Barcelona and printed on chine collé paper by Joan Barbarà, Barcelona. The use of chine collé allows the printer to pull finer details off the plate and provides a background color behind the image that is different from the surrounding backing sheet, allowing the image to pop out against the background. In this case, the paper used under the etching itself is white and the backing sheet is cream. The use of cream backing paper accentuates the white paper under the etching and highlights the vibrancy of the colors in the etching itself. This work is hand-signed by Joan Miró (1893-1983) in pencil in the lower right margin and numbered from the edition of 50 in the lower left margin.
