Historical Description

Joan Miró Danseuse Créole (Creole Dancer), 1978 features a dancing figure drawn in a brilliant red and outlined with black lines seeming to explode outward to create an exhilarating sense of movement and energy. Lively splatters of red paint flash out from the head and spill over the edge of the pictorial plane, further emphasizing this explosive sense of energy. Black swirls around the eyes create a focus of intensity within the frenetic movement and commands the viewer’s attention. Hints of green and yellow illuminate the lower portion of the piece and provide a solid base for the frenetic vibration of the figure. A realistic element, in the form of a perfectly placed handprint on the arm on the left side of the piece, contrasts sharply with other elements, and creates an intriguing dynamic between reality and abstraction. A feathering of light blue lines on the bottom right balances delicate swirls of darker blue to the left center of the figure. In expert style, Miró combines all of these playful elements to create an artwork that conveys and celebrates a tremendous joy of life that is both intoxicating and contagious.

Created in 1978, this work is hand signed by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 - Palma, 1983) in pencil in the lower recto and numbered from the edition of 50 in pencil in the lower recto.
