Historical Description

Joan Miró Le Grand Carnassier (The Large Carnivore), 1969 proves that art can have a refined aesthetic quality while possessing a lightness and appreciation for imagination and play. In this whimsical work Miro creates a primitive creature with fangs and a curious eye. Despite his towering stance and menacing grin, the artist draws with a humorous tone that makes him harmless and pleasant. His body is outlined in the richly textured surface of the black carborundum which pops over bright splashes of color and thinly marked lines. Hardly just a cartoon, the works childishness is elevated by such a formally stunning composition and striking sense of depth

Created in 1969, this etching and aquatint with Carborundum printed on Arches paper is hand-signed in pencil by Joan Miró (1893-1983) in the lower right. Published by Maeght éditeur, Paris and printed by Arte Adrien Maeght, Paris, this aquatint is numbered from the edition of 75 signed, aside from a few artist proofs.
