Joan Miró Hommage a San Lazzaro, Pl. 4, 1977 features an almost-abstract figural form defined by thin lines and solid blocks of color. The lines weave into each other so seamlessly that they evoke the practice of contour drawing, in which the hand of the artist attempts to copy the subject without lifting the drawing utensil. At the center of the encircling lines at the top of the image lies a solid patch of yellow that almost resembles a nose in the context of the composition. Thin lines on either side of the yellow patch demarcate circular forms that could function as stylized eyes. Solid patches of red, green, and blue accent the edges of the loose figural form, filling the negative space where the thin line stops and curves back into the form. A faded circular patch of lavender lies to the left of the overall form, while a scribble of orange lies slightly higher on the other side. These two colors help frame the loose form at the center of the composition and add an asymmetrical dynamic to the overall image. The interplay between line and color in Joan Miró Hommage a San Lazzaro, Pl. 4, 1977 showcases the artist’s masterful handling of composition.
