Historical Description

Jim Dine Untitled, 1982 is a multicolored robe full of surface texture that immediately catches our attention. There is no need for the identity of the person in the robe to be revealed—the robe by itself is the main character of this work. The bathrobe for Dine carries a whole new persona and identity. He constantly reinvented them in different color schemes both in print and drawing. Without a tangible identity, the bathrobe carries a virtuosity that stands alone in resolute power. Only something that Jim Dine has the ability to, an everyday object becomes a work of art that holds a kind of internal power. Filled with charisma and character, everywhere you examine, each pictorial field contains expressive brushstrokes. Beautiful colors and patterned brushstrokes decorate the robe to appeal to the viewer. His choice of color palette consists of exuberant reds contrasting with greens and blues. There is a painterly quality to this work that features a gestural ambiance. Particularly poignant are its sustained colors, textural qualities, and powerful stance.

Created in 1982, Jim Dine Untitled is a work of grease crayon and charcoal on paper and hand-signed and dated by Jim Dine (Ohio, 1935 –) in pencil in the upper left. This work is a unique and original work on paper.
