Jean Dufy Harbor, c. 1920 lays out a splendid nautical scene: below a pale blue sky, a variety of small boats float on shimmery turquoise waters. Dufy’s signature quickness of line effectively gives just enough suggestion of vessels and people without unnecessary detail. The gorgeous color palette balances fresh blue-green hues with warm orange-yellow accented details, capturing the essence of warm sun-rays and cool languid ocean. Each stroke of color, flowing loosely and quickly, gives the work a bright moving energy. The result is a wonderfully romantic composition, full of airiness and exuberance. One can almost smell the salty waters and hear the gentle splash of waters under creaking boats. Dufy possessed a magical ability to create delightful painterly worlds, and his skills are fully evident in this charming and peaceful harbor scene.
Created around 1920, this watercolor on paper is hand-signed by Jean Dufy in ink in the lower right. This is a unique and original work.
