Jean Dubuffet’s Le Tétrascopique, 1970-71 is a compelling example of the artist’s later work, where he pushed the boundaries of abstraction and texture. It is characterized by intricate, interconnected forms outlined in bold, black lines, filled with vibrant fields of color. In Le Tétrascopique, Dubuffet uses a limited but contrasting colors to create a striking visual contrast. The red and blue interact dynamically within the composition, emphasizing both tension and harmony between the two hues.
Le Tétrascopique, 1970 -71 is abstract and fragmented, composed of organic shapes that seem to pulse with energy. These forms are loosely defnied, suggesting a network of cells or forms in motion, almost like an internal landscape or a view through a magnifying lens. The black outlines that surround the colored areas enhance the sense of structure, while also allowing the forms to appear fluid and alive. There is a sense of movement and transformation, as if the shapes themselves are in a constant state of fluidity, and brings all planes to the surface.
It is Dubuffet’s intention to abolish all the usual categroeis and classifications of one notion and another. Le Tétrascopique exemplifies Dubuffet’s interest in the expressive potential of abstraction, rejecting conventional representation in favor of a more instinctive and primal approach to color and form. Dubuffet invites viewers to experience the painting not just visually, but also through its physical presence.
Created between 1970 and 1971, these panels are numbered from the edition of 45 in ink. This work is hand-signed by Jean Dubuffet (Le Havre, 1901- Paris, 1985) with the artist’s initials and date: ‘J.D. 71’.
