James Rosenquist Time Stream Nobel Prize, 1975 is an abstract figurative work created to ceremoniously celebrate the Nobel Prize through a kaleidoscopic canvas that shocks the eye. In honor of the Nobel Peace prize, Rosenquist created the symbol of an atom by blocking off sections during the screen printing process, allowing the negative space between colors to shine through. The background is a burst of color; orange, blue, yellow, green, and red all dominate the page, though not uniformly. Colors overlap and blend together and peel off the page to reveal the layer of negative space between the cracks. Four silver nails lay horizontally with the rivets facing to the left of the sheet, with a single nail deliberately placed perpendicular to the set. Through the early to mid-1970’s, nails became a semi recurring motif in Rosenquist's works in which he explored through source collages, prints, drawings, and paintings. In Time Dust, Rosenquist is quoted saying, “…the 1, 2, 3, 4 slash-diagonal are like a marking time. [The nails] are very much like circles of confusion. There’s the point of identity, but then it’s an ugly time reminder” (Glenn).
