Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec Mademoiselle Marcelle Lender, En Buste, 1895; Captivating audiences with her elaborate outfits and red hair, French singer, dancer, and entertainer, Marcelle Lender (1862 -1926) was a favorite among many.
This wonderfully expressive and vibrant work is a brilliant expression of Toulouse-Lautrec's fascination with her. "I paint things as they are. I don't comment," was said by Toulouse-Lautrec about his art; and with a sultry sex appeal, emoting off of her as she declines to make eye contact with the viewer, mouth slightly open in a smile, there is no doubt that Mademoiselle Lender is just as he portrays her to be.
This original color lithograph is inscribed with the artist's initials "FL" in grey in the upper left. A third state as defined in Whittrock due to the border surrounding the image, and color stones not printed. Printed on imitation Japon paper, this work is backed. The edition is out of 111 in which some are signed and numbered by the artist with an inscription and a blind stamp of 'Pan'. 36 impressions of this version were included in the portfolio of the artist's edition, and 75 in the deluxe edition of the periodical Pan.
