Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec Portrait d'un homme, Monsieur X, 1898 both conceals and reveals the identity of the man. Delicate lines detail a head of hair, as well as a full moustache that sweeps beneath his prominent. His eyes, often one of the most expressive parts of a face, are hidden – there is little that defines them except some light eyebrows under which there is a slight shadow. This adds intrigue to the identity of the man, who is thought to be Arthur Meyer, editor of Le Gaulois, a newspaper created in the late 1800’s.
Created in 1898, this drypoint etching on zinc on Japan paper is stamped with Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s (Albi, 1864 – Château Malrôme, 1901) monogram ‘TL’ in red in the lower right margin. From the edition of around 25 known impressions, 15 of which are numbered. Published by Manzi, Joyant, & Cie, Paris in 1911.
