Historical Description

This elegant work, Georges Braque Tête grecque (Grecian Head) c. 1950-60,  is a striking reinterpretation of classical Greek sculpture, as a cobalt silhouette floats in a heavenly blue sky. Slightly eccentric elements draw us in, as the abstracted hair, playful asymmetrical star, and vivid circular hat worn by Tête grecque provide pleasant deviations from traditional beauty. These striking points of interest are what allow Braque to embrace Greek antiquity and showcase a regal profile in an unconventional way.

Created c. 1950-60, this original color lithograph is printed on Arches paper and was published by Editions Jean-Paul Loriot. An artist's proof aside from the numbered edition of 150, this work is hand-signed by Georges Braque (Argenteuil-sur-Seine, 1882- Paris, 1963) in pencil in the lower right, and also signed in the plate at the bottom of the star.
