Georges Braque L’Oiseau d’Octobre (October Bird), 1962 is a distinct lithograph featuring once more, Braque’s beloved bird imagery. In the center of the image is the form of a bird outlined in black. Its shape is flattened and geometric, resembling a paper cutout. This two dimensional form is reminiscent of Braque’s earlier Cubist works. Expressive curves continue to combine with the rigidity of the straight line, infusing the work with a poetic quality. The subject is definitely birdlike, without being directly figurative, to convey the sense of flight while maintaining its abstract quality. Richly colored, the inky black impression glistens in light, and floats against its lightly colored blue background. The bird appears unframed, and central. The tips of its wings and tail are decorated in dark gold. Surrounding this marvelous form are various black flowers which appear to blossom. This dynamic image is elegantly framed within a loosely formed dark circle, emphasizing its decorative quality. Braque uses color as the primary way of designing this intricate image.
Created in 1962, this color lithograph on Rives paper with a partial Rives BFK watermark is hand-signed by Georges Braque (Argentueil, Val-d’Oise, 1882 – Paris, 1963) in pencil in the lower right, numbered from the edition of 90 in pencil in the lower left, published and printed by Maeght, Paris.
