Georges Braque L'oiseau de sables (Bird of the Sands), from Braque Lithographe, 1962 fuses literary creativity with visual expression (this artwork is one of 5 lithographs created for the illustrated book Braque Lithographe). In the center of the image is a bird in flight. Colored with subtle shades of blue, brown and gold, the work exudes a delicate elegance. A painterly, gold circle frames the bird, the white background evoking a sense of weightlessness. This is the intended style as Braque deliberately thickens his strokes to construct a more painterly feel. The textures and colors combine beautifully, creating a sense of weightlessness. This artwork encompasses Braques' color theory as well. The artist has said "You put a blob of yellow here, and another at the further edge of the canvas: straight away a rapport is established between them. Colour acts in the way that music does (Braque)." Arguably, this image is meant to be a multi sensory experience which combines music, literature and visual art.
