Positioned at a slight angle so as best to accent the highlights and geometry of the subject, Braque depicts an antique-inspired crafted chair, reminiscent of a traditional French past of which he knew so well. This piece evokes a nostalgia unseen in any other work, as we are transported to a dimly lit artist's café in the bohemian, Parisian neighborhood of Montmartre. We need only to take a glimpse at the iconic curves and bends along the back of the chair to know that one of this kind was all too common during Braque's time. The coloration allows this chair to stand apart from the rest, as it appears as though a medley of tones work together to create a wholesome work. The bright teals remind us of a rusted copper, implying perhaps the damp, rainy environment of Paris and its suburbs. It is a stunning work, which slowly reveals itself to its audience, unfolding its secrets from a bohemian past.
Published by Maeght éditeur, Paris in 1962, this work is part of a series of etchings that were based upon Braque's original watercolors, gouaches and paintings. This work is numbered from the edition of 300 in pencil in the lower left margin and hand signed by Georges Braque (Argenteuil, Val-d'Oise, 1882 - Paris, 1963) in pencil in the lower right margin.
