Toreros seek to elicit inspiration and art from their work. Their intentions are not to deliberately cause harm the bull, but create an emotional connection with the crowd through the bull. It is a fragile relationship played out for the crowd to witness, and Braque captures it beautifully.
Through capturing a moment in which the torero is closing in on the bull who is succumbing to his wounds Braque forces us as the viewer to examine the delicate relationship on display. The only face visible is the bulls, but the emotions displayed in the body language by both creatures speak to Braque’s brilliant understanding of the human condition.
Created in 1950, this color photolithograph was based on an original drawing by Georges Braque. This work is hand signed by Georges Braque (Argenteuil-sur-Seine, 1882- Paris, 1963) in pencil in the lower right margin and numbered from the edition of 75.
